ASAIO Journal honors Dr. Maybauer’s article as “Editor’s Pick”

Marc Maybauer

Accolades are due to Marc Maybauer, M.D., Ph.D, professor of anesthesiology, who has co-authored an impressive 22 articles published in 2024. As a highlight, a recent review article by Dr. Maybauer and colleagues was honored by ASAIO Journal as an “Editor’s Pick” online, and he was highlighted in a “Meet the Authors” feature for their September 2024 issue.

Dr. Maybauer and his colleagues’ article, “Central Venopulmonary Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Background and Standardized Nomenclature,” discusses the necessity for standardized terminology in the practice of extracorporeal life support (ECLS), which is particularly important for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The article advocates for the adoption of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Maastrict Treaty for ECLS Nomenclature guidelines and serves as a guide to terminology and details surgical approaches.

The senior author on the article, Dr. Maybauer also serves as the executive director of Critical Care Organization, chief of the Division of Critical Care Medicine, and director of the ECMO Program. His co-authors were:

  • J. Michael Brewer, D.O., M.S., from the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute, Specialty Critical Care and Acute Circulatory Support Service, INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Queens University Health Care Quality Programs, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
  • Roberto Lorusso, M.D., Ph.D., from the ECLS Centrum, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Department, and Cardiology Department, Heart & Vascular Center, Maastricht University Medical Center, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute, Maastricht, The Netherlands
  • L. Mikael Broman, M.D., Ph.D., from the ECMO Centre Karolinska, Karolinska University Hospital, and the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Intitutet, Stockholm, Sweden
  • Steven A. Conrad, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, from the Department of Medicine, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, Louisiana
  • Justyna Swol, M.D. Ph.D., from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Paracelsus Medical University, Nuremberg, Germany

“This manuscript underscores the critical importance of standardized nomenclature in the field of ECLS, particularly in venopulmonary ECMO utilizing central pulmonary artery access,” stated the authors. “The comprehensive guide to ECMO nomenclature provided herein, based on the ELSO Maastricht Treaty, aims to serve as a practical reference for clinicians and researchers. By delineating the specific terminology for various cannulation configurations involving central PA access, this guide helps elucidate complex clinical practices for both current and future ECMO practitioners.”
