Program Mission & Aims

Residents in basic skills bootcamp


Our program’s overarching purpose is to develop in our resident graduates the knowledge and skills to be recognized as outstanding clinical anesthesiologists, while also sustaining an environment that stimulates investigative clinical curiosity to advance our field.


Our program’s aims are reflected in the following goals and objectives.

  1. Provide a superior clinical and didactic learning environment that engages our world-renowned faculty and provides a clear path for resident growth in knowledge and autonomy as they care for patients with diverse and challenging comorbidities.
    • Objectives to meet this goal include:
      • provide residents with a superior and comprehensive clinical and educational work environment that encompasses all aspects of the peri-operative and peri-procedural management of patents during surgical and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
      • deliver to residents a didactic curriculum that provides a solid foundation of anesthesiology fundamentals along with the latest developments in the specialty
      • Success in achieving this goal will be measured by a continued 5-year board pass rate above the national average.
  2. Integrate research and innovation into resident education so that our residents continue to contribute to the field of anesthesiology.
    • Objectives to meet this goal are:
      • facilitate each resident’s participation in basic, applied, or clinical outcomes research
      • ensure that each resident contributes to the specialty in a documentable way, including, but not limited to presentations at local, regional, national, or international conferences, peer-reviewed journal publications, peer-reviewed online educational or research platforms such as the Anesthesia Toolbox, and participation in educational activities for the community, medical professionals and patients
      • Success in reaching this goal will be measured by the number of publications, presentations, and other documented contributions from our residents.
  3. Engender in our residents a culture of patient safety and quality improvement as measured by documented resident contributions to departmental and/or institutional patient safety and quality improvement efforts.
    • Objectives to meet this goal are:
      • facilitate each resident’s involvement in specific, measurable patient safety/quality improvement initiatives
      • provide each resident with training on root cause analysis
      • Success in reaching this goal will be demonstrated with each resident’s participation in a well-designed and documented patient safety and quality improvement project.
  4. Prepare residents for any practice environment, whether fellowship, academic medicine, or private practice.
    • Objectives to meet this goal are:
      • provide residents with didactic training on practice options
      • facilitate resident growth in leadership development, fiscal responsibility, healthcare management, and the importance of lifelong learning
      • train residents to practice in a way that is free of inherent bias, recognizes and accounts for health care disparities, and reflects inclusiveness
      • The successful outcome of this goal will be reflected in a continued distribution of approximately 50% of our residents choosing fellowships or academic medicine, and 50% entering private practice.
