About Shiv Rawal

My name is Shiv Rawal, MD, and I joined the Department of Anesthesiology in 2023 as an assistant professor in the Divisions of Critical Care Medicine and Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. I earned my medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, and completed my anesthesiology residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis, MO. I completed the Adult Combined Cardiothoracic & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship right here at the University of Florida.

I was drawn to medicine by the opportunity to have a direct and meaningful impact on peoples’ lives, and I chose to become an anesthesiologist because I enjoy working in dynamic, team-based environments. I believe our skillset allows us to care for a diverse population of patients both inside and outside the operating room. As a physician in the operating room and intensive care unit, I strive to provide holistic patient care that focuses on enhanced patient recovery. My areas of expertise are cardiothoracic surgical patients, point-of-care ultrasound and transesophageal echocardiography, and mechanical circulatory support.

I’m very excited to continue my career in Gainesville. My sister has been practicing radiology at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center for over 10 years, and my parents have owned multiple businesses in Gainesville for over 20 years. My wife is also a registered nurse in the cardiology intensive care unit at Shands, which has given me a strong sense of respect and admiration for all members of the healthcare system: especially those who provide direct patient care.

Outside of work, I enjoy anything related to music – from playing guitar and producing music to collecting vinyl records.
