About François Modave

My name is François Modave, PhD, and I joined the department of anesthesiology in 2022 with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). I received my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science and my master’s degree in mathematics applied to engineering at the University of Paris IX Dauphine. I then received my PhD in computer science at INP-ENSEEIHT in Toulouse, France.

I am now a professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Florida College of Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology in Gainesville, FL. I started graduate school when AI was becoming a hot topic and I was particularly interested in how it could be used to improve decisions. I have been working with Chris Giordano, MD, and Patrick Tighe, MD, for two years to provide a fully asynchronous and online AI course for the clinical community at UF. This project is highly complementary of the University of Florida’s artificial intelligence capabilities and will help propel us as a leader in AI-based medicine.

In my free time, I train for triathlons. I have been racing mostly long-distance triathlons since 1992. It’s been a great way to explore the world. I’ve competed as far away as New Zealand, South Korea and Brazil. We speak three languages at home — English, Spanish and French —and our two beautiful children seamlessly switch between all three.
