About Nicolai Goettel

Nicolai Goettel, MD, DESA, EDIC, joined the Department of Anesthesiology as an Associate Professor in the Division of Neuroanesthesia on Jan. 4, 2021.

He came to the University of Florida from the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he served as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Anesthesia, Surgical Intensive Care, Prehospital Emergency Medicine, and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital Basel. He also served as a Senior Scientist at the University of Basel.

Dr. Goettel earned his medical degree from the University of Bonn in Germany and completed residencies in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in Switzerland. He completed fellowship training in neuroanesthesia at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Goettel is an author of multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and a peer reviewer for several journals. In addition, he has presented abstracts at numerous major conferences and meetings worldwide and given dozens of invited presentations and lectures. Dr. Goettel is a member of several professional societies in the fields of anesthesiology, critical care, and neuroscience and has also completed and served as the PI on several research projects, with a focus on neuroanesthesia and perioperative neurocognitive disorders.
