Pediatric Anesthesia

The Pediatric Anesthesia rotation provides exposure to a variety of pediatric cases.

During the four-week rotation, residents will participate in the care of about 100 patients, and will develop skills for setting up ORs for pediatric patients of different ages.

They should master skills in mask ventilation and intubation of pediatric patients, including neonates.

Specific learning topics include:

  • NPO guidelines for children
  • Pediatric respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • Pediatric ENT
  • Pediatric temperature monitoring
  • Fluids and electrolytes
  • Blood products
  • Anesthetic management for premature infants and newborns

Residents will develop the ability to evaluate complex anesthesia-related medical problems in infants and children, manage pain control after surgery, and provide anesthesia for procedures such as radiation therapy and MRI.

Senior residents may have the opportunity to electively rotate at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, a major referral center for subspecialty pediatric care, located in Orlando.
