2020-2021 Interview Season: What to Expect

We will conduct residency interviews from late October 2020 through January 2021. If you are invited to interview for a residency position, here is what you can expect.

Interview Invitations

As in years past, we will use the Thalamus scheduling software to arrange interviews. Interview invitations will come via email from Thalamus with instructions for creating an account. Once invitees create accounts, they will be able to go into our system and select the interview date. As the interview date nears, someone from the Anesthesiology Education Office will contact invitees with specific instructions.

Virtual Interviews

All interviews will be conducted through ZOOM. Invitees will receive the ZOOM link by email at least 24 hours before the interview. Per UF College of Medicine policy, we are not permitted to invite or host anyone for an in-person interview or visit. Everyone is welcome to explore Gainesville and north central Florida on their own (it is a wonderful place to live and train!) but we cannot accommodate any requests for in-person visits, even for those who are in town.

Virtual Interview Format

We will invite about 12 applicants per recruitment day, and plan to interview about 240 people.

  • Pre-Interview Virtual Happy Hour: To get to know our applicants, our residents will host a virtual happy hour on the evening before your interview.
  • Introduction and Program Overview:  This will be a group presentation and discussion led by the Program Director and members of our Resident Recruitment Team.
  • Interviews: Invitees will typically have a total of three interviews. These will include two 20-minute interviews, each with a two-person team of faculty members and/or residents, and one individual interview with the Program Director. Interspersed among these interviews will be a couple of breaks, during which interviewees will have the opportunity to engage in small-group discussions with current residents as well as some interactive exercises.
  • Conclusion: The interview day will culminate with a short group session to ask last minute questions.

We anticipate that the total time investment will be about 3.5 – 4 hours.
