University of Florida (UF) Department of Anesthesiology Chair Gregory Janelle, M.D., FASE, FASA, professor of anesthesiology and surgery, has been appointed chief of medical staff for UF Health Shands. Prior to this, he served as vice chief of medical staff for two years.
Janelle was chosen for his extensive knowledge and leadership skills. “His deep knowledge of our medical staff bylaws and credentialing processes is matched by his ability to guide medical staff services through complex challenges with clarity, collaboration, and purpose,” said Nisha Patel, director of medical staff administration, who worked closely with Janelle while he was vice chief.
Patel also spoke about Janelle’s constancy and consideration: “Dr. Janelle is exceptionally detail-oriented, consistently ensuring that decisions are thoughtful, well-informed, and aligned with medical staff governance.”
Janelle’s leadership experience at UF Health, including administrative positions and committee assignments, started over a decade ago. To name a few, he was medical director of surgical services, chair of the credentialing committee, and member of the medical staff quality and operations committee. Additionally, his history with UF goes back even further as he completed his residency and cardiac anesthesiology fellowship here. He joined the department’s faculty in 1999 and was named chair of the department in 2026.
Janelle’s appointment to chief of medical staff for UF Health Shands shows his continued dedication to advancing institutional excellence.
