A new book co-edited by Rene Przkora, M.D., Ph.D., provides a comprehensive reference for the management of pain before, during, and after surgery. Perioperative Pain Management: From Preoperative Optimization to Transitional Postoperative Care, published in July by Springer, addresses pain treatment across several areas of healthcare, including anesthesia, surgery, pharmacy, nursing, and physical therapy. The book is organized around the stages of surgical care, beginning with an overview of pain pathways and the role of pain management in surgery.
Along with co-editing the book, Przkora co-wrote the chapter “Nerve Injuries and Neuropathic Pain: Focuses on the Identification and Treatment of Nerve-Related Pain Issues.” In addition, department colleague Patrick Tighe, M.D., M.S., contributed the chapter “Chronic Postsurgical Pain: Identification and Management,” co-written with former department member Timothy Feldheim, M.D., M.S.
Chapter by chapter, evidence-based strategies and protocols are detailed along with clinical case studies intended to illustrate their use in patient care. Topics include medications, techniques, and interventions used to assess and manage pain in patients undergoing surgical procedures. The book also addresses pain management during extended recovery and the treatment of postoperative pain that continues over the longer term.
