In June, 25 of our residents are graduating and moving on in their careers. One of these outstanding graduates is Kellen Creech, D.O., MPH.
Creech received his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and served as one of our chief residents for the past academic year. He shared with us some of his thoughts on the residency program and living in Gainesville.
Q: Why did you choose the University of Florida for residency?
A: Honestly, what stood out to me most about the University of Florida was the combination of really strong clinical training and a genuinely supportive culture. I experienced this as a medical student who rotated within the anesthesiology department. I also worked with a recent graduate of the program as a medical student and realized that she had the skills of the anesthesiologist I wanted to become.
Outside the hospital, Gainesville is an easy place to live during training: affordable, good quality of life, short commutes, and enough to do outside of work to keep balance. Overall, I think UF prepared me well and I would choose this program again without any hesitation.
Q: What is one thing you wish you had known on your first day of residency?
A: Probably where to go, UF Health is a big place, and it is easy to get lost.
Q: What is one highlight of your time in the residency program?
A: It’s too hard to choose just one, so I’ll give you a few highlights: mole (night shift) rotations, presenting at SCA conferences, and being a chief resident this past year.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Gainesville?
A: My wife and I really enjoy going to UF baseball games!
Q: What are your post-residency plans?
A: I’ll be starting cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship here at UF this summer!
