The University of Florida (UF) Department of Anesthesiology held its Celebration of Research on March 5. Department members gathered to view over 40 posters and listen to a handful of oral presentations as well as a special keynote address.
This annual event is an opportunity for department members to not only showcase their research but to display the team work, mentorship, and rigor at the heart of the academic and clinical practice. It also paves the way for new collaborations and research endeavors.
Paola Silva Enriquez, M.D., CA-1, was one of the many residents with a case report. Her poster delved into the risk of nerve catheter infection and stressed the importance of mitigating risks by using antibiotic prophylaxis practices, considering catheter tunneling, and evaluating earlier removal or avoidance in high-risk patients. “We wanted to start a discussion on the risks and benefits of analgesia with femoral nerve catheters and the possible risk factors that could lead to an infection,” Enriquez said.
Several faculty members were the primary investigator on multiple posters, such as Prodip Bose, M.D., whose abstract “Targeting Iron-Mediated Neurotoxicity in Spinal Cord Injury: A Novel Iron Chelator Therapy Reduces Motor Deficits and Promotes Recovery in a Rodent Model” won top basic science abstract.
The Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) team, led by Samsun Lampotang, Ph.D., produced three posters on computer vision monitoring. Lampotang and the CSSALT team brought out their simulations alongside their posters that showed computer vision monitoring usage in regard to chest and urine drainage systems.
The event ended with keynote speaker Vesna Jevtovic-Todorovic, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, FASA, professor of anesthesiology and pharmacology at the University of Colorado.
Congratulations to all who contributed their research and many thanks to all the administrative staff, including the Anesthesiology Research Operations team and Communications & Publishing Office, who put together this year’s event.
