Rebecca Wakeman, CCRC, CPT, manager of the University of Florida (UF) Department of Anesthesiology clinical research office, received a 2026 UF Superior Accomplishment Award. She was recognized for her individual employee performance in division 5 (UF Health Colleges, Academic Units, and Research Centers & Institutes).
Wakeman’s excellent work ethic was captured in the many nomination letters from notable department leaders and faculty, detailing her mastery of clinical research fundamentals and superb leadership skills. Rene Przkora, M.D., professor of anesthesiology and associate chair for research, wrote about Wakeman’s transformation of clinical research operations within the department: “Rebecca has delivered measurable results in three critical areas—process excellence, financial stewardship, and cultural transformation.”
After spending four years in the UF Division of Infectious Disease and Global Medicine as the clinical research manager, Wakeman joined the Department of Anesthesiology in 2024 and proved to be the stabilizer the team needed as it was in the middle of a transitional period. She started by laying out clear expectations for the coordinators and focused on training. “Rebecca implemented a re-training plan to cover gaps in the coordinators’ knowledge and skills,” said Robin Vaughn, associate director of health care administration.
Wakeman also prioritized team culture and collaboration. Martin Noguera, M.S., CRA, CPRA, CFRA, assistant director of research administration, emphasized that she fostered a culture of accountability without blame. Matt Shaw, clinical research coordinator III, echoed this. “She leads by example, setting high standards for herself and inspiring those around her to do the same,” said Shaw. “Her collaborative approach fosters a positive and productive work environment.”

Part of her role as manager of clinical research includes managing the North American Hyperthermia Registry (NAMHR). Nikolaus Gravenstein, M.D., the Jerome H. Modell, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology and director of NAMHR, highlighted Wakeman’s contributions to the registry. “Under her leadership, the registry hasn’t missed a beat, continues to enroll and grow, and provides unique research experiences for undergraduate students,” said Gravenstein.
UF Health announced winners in an email at the end of January and recipients were honored at a luncheon on February 16, with UF Health leadership in attendance. Fifteen of these division winners will be chosen for university-level awards.
Congratulations, Rebecca!
