2026 Modell-Shah Lecture highlights patient blood management

Greg Janelle and Daryl Kor at the Modell-Shah Lecture

The 2026 Jerome H. Modell, M.D., – Dinesh O. Shah, Ph.D., Annual Lecture in Anesthesiology was held on Thursday, February 5, in the Harrell Medical Education Building. This year the University of Florida (UF) Department of Anesthesiology was honored to welcome Daryl J. Kor, M.D., M.Sc., chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as our keynote speaker.

Department members, including Shirley Graves, M.D., emeritus professor of anesthesiology and widow of Jerome H. Modell, M.D., came out to listen to Kor’s lecture titled “Patient Blood Management: Improving Both Sides of the Equation.” Kor is a leading expert in transfusion medicine and patient blood management, with a distinguished career in clinical research, policy development, and innovation in blood utilization strategies.

To honor Modell, Dinesh O. Shah, Ph.D., emeritus professor of anesthesiology, created the Jerome H. Modell, M.D., – Dinesh O. Shah, Ph.D., Annual Lecture in Anesthesiology fund, which supports a visit and lecture by a prominent anesthesiology researcher. Modell recruited Shah in 1970 hoping that his background in surface science, though unconventional, would lead the department on a path toward diversity, creativity, and innovation. The collaboration over the years was highly successful and a model of multidisciplinary innovation.
