Abigail Schirmer, M.D., CA-3 resident, has been recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) with the Resident Distinction Award, which was created for anesthesiology residents to develop their professional citizenship, leadership, and scholarship capabilities. She is the first University of Florida anesthesiology resident to receive this new designation, which the ASA began awarding in 2025.
Schirmer earned this award by showing high performance and interest in service, leadership, advocacy, and education. She also needed to meet additional criteria focused on leadership, scholarship, learning, and other areas.

Schirmer attended this year’s ASA annual meeting, where she shared her research about airway management in high-risk cases. By being involved in ASA and other medical societies, she was able to fulfill the leadership requirements.
Other achievements have helped Schirmer stand out, such as her selection for the role of ASA Resident Component president and her induction into the ASA Resident Scholar program, which she will participate in during the 2025-2026 academic year. Her involvement in these activities show her commitment to being an active leader in the anesthesiology residency community.
This recognition is a testament to Schirmer’s dedication to excellent leadership and scholarship within the field of anesthesiology. With this ASA distinction, Schirmer will have the chance to grow her personal and professional abilities as well as experience more ASA opportunities.
