Resident Spotlight: Paola Nathaly Silva Enriquez, M.D.

Meet Paola Nathaly Silva Enriquez, M.D., a talented and dedicated member of our anesthesiology residency program. After completing her medical degree at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Facultad de Medicina in Colombia, Enriquez joined our team as an intern in 2024. As she embarks on her first clinical year of anesthesiology, we took a moment to catch up with her and reflect on her experiences so far. In this Q&A, Enriquez shares her insights and advice for those following in her footsteps, offering a unique perspective on what it’s like to be part of our vibrant residency community.

Q: Why did you choose UF for residency?
I chose UF because it offers the perfect blend of academic excellence, hands-on training, and a supportive, collaborative culture. From the moment I interviewed, I felt that the attendings and especially the residents genuinely cared about each other, both professionally and personally. The variety and complexity of cases here, along with UF’s commitment to education, made it clear this was where I could become the best anesthesiologist I can be.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in applying for UF’s residency program?
Come with an open mind and a genuine interest in learning—not just from textbooks, but from your patients, colleagues, and every OR experience. Show who you are as a person during interviews; UF values team players who bring kindness, curiosity, and resilience. And don’t be afraid to ask questions—this program thrives on a culture of mentorship.

Q: What is one highlight of your time in the residency program so far?

The very first highlight has been my amazing co-residents, who have truly become my Gainesville family. Coming from Colombia, it’s been such a meaningful experience to have this strong support system while adapting to a new country and culture. I’ve also been amazed by the size of the hospital, the diversity of the patient population, and the high complexity of the cases and surgeries we get to be involved in.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Gainesville?

Gainesville strikes the perfect balance—it’s a vibrant college town with a friendly community, plenty of outdoor activities, and great local food, there are several amazing restaurants. And we are nearby big cities like Orlando and Jacksonville as well as small beach cities that you can visit.

Q: What are your post-residency goals?

I’m considering pursuing a fellowship, and I value that UF offers a wide variety of opportunities. My ultimate goal is to become the best physician I can be—clinically skilled, compassionate, and well-rounded—while also maintaining a healthy work/life balance so I can spend quality time with my husband and family, who are my greatest source of support throughout this journey.
