Residents prepare to enter their CA-1 year with the annual Basic Skills Boot Camp

Twenty-four soon-to-be CA-1 residents participated in this year’s Basic Skills Boot Camp. Faculty, staff, and residents helped prepare them for their first clinical anesthesiology year.

The 2025 boot camp was held on the first week of June. One of the main purposes of this week of lectures and workshops was to prepare residents for their first year of clinical anesthesia training. Different sessions provided residents with tips, so they can be ready to meet the challenges of an operating room.

Residents participating in a scavenger hunt find Dr. Janelle and take a photo with him.

The boot camp involved a wide variety of simulations and demonstrations, such as showing residents the basics of airway management and the maintenance of anesthesia. In addition, residents learned how to deal with common emergencies in the operating room and handle different devices and equipment. In one of these sessions, Amanda Frantz, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology, taught them the ins and outs of crash carts.

Frantz was also one of many instructors who included hands-on activities in their sessions. As part of her CPR training, residents competed against their peers in a CPR race. To be the winner, the person had to perform the procedure on a dummy accurately and follow the correct rhythm.

Like in previous years, the boot camp included training needed for residents to survive and thrive in a clinical setting. However, it also introduced a new activity this year. Residents broke into teams and competed in a departmental scavenger hunt. One item on the hunt was to find the department chair’s office and take a photo with our interim chair, Greg Janelle, M.D., FASA, FASE.

A number of faculty, residents, and staff worked hard to put together this year’s boot camp and make it a success. Many thanks to the teams at the Anesthesiology Education Office, the Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation, the Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies, the Graduate Medical Education Office, and the instructors below.
