Abby Schirmer, M.D., selected for ASA Resident Scholar program

Abigail Schirmer

CA-2 resident Abby Schirmer, M.D., was selected by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to participate in the Anesthesiology Policy Research Rotation in Political Affairs, also known as the Resident Scholar program. Schirmer is one of six outstanding anesthesiology residents chosen from a highly competitive applicant pool. Participants were chosen based on their involvement in advocacy activities, regional and program representation, and a personal interview.

Residents gain hands-on experience with the political, legislative, and regulatory factors that influence patient care during this American Board of Anesthesiology-approved rotation in Washington, DC. They gain an appreciation for the huge impact that policymaking and governmental actions have on all areas of medicine. Schirmer will participate in the four-week rotation in the ASA Advocacy Office during the 2025-2026 academic year.

The ASA Resident Scholar program was initiated in 2010 and currently has 71 alumni. Applications for the 2026-2027 academic year will be accepted in December 2025.
