As we get closer to graduation, we want to take a moment to spotlight one of our CA3 residents: Vanessa Metellus, M.D. Metellus joined us as a CA1 in 2022. She received her medical degree from our own UF College of Medicine. After she graduates in June, Metellus will work as an anesthesiologist at the University of Wisconsin. Shout out to Amanda Frantz, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology, for conducting this interview for us.
Q: What is your favorite case you have done so far in residency?
A: I find liver transplants particularly rewarding. They offer a rich learning environment and demand a high level of critical thinking, real-time decision making, and physiological understanding, which I find intellectually stimulating.

Q: What kitchen appliance would you be and why?
A: I’d be an air fryer – healthy, efficient, and able to make almost anything work. Plus, who doesn’t love a crispy outcome with minimal effort.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Dune – The visuals are wild, the story’s deep, and it just hits different every time I watch it.
Q: What is your least favorite food?
A: I know it’s weird, but my least favorite food is pasta. I just hate the heavy, sluggish feeling I get after eating it, it never sits right with me.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Japan, for sure. It had been a dream destination of mine for years, and I was lucky enough to go last year with my mom. The culture, the food, the scenery – it was everything I hoped for and more.
