For four weeks at the beginning of each calendar year, first-year residents in the University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology participate in Intern Education Month. This rotation is filled with lectures, simulations, test prep, and shadowing. The month leads up to the In-Training Exam (ITE) that all anesthesiology residents take each year.
Based on feedback from last year’s interns, the Anesthesiology Education Office made some changes to the curriculum. The number of anesthesia subspecialty lectures was increased, and shadowing was initiated. Each Thursday interns shadowed one of their colleagues who is currently in their clinical anesthesia years (CA1-CA3).
“This gave them an opportunity to see many of the clinical spaces they will rotate through as a CA1-CA3 resident, including the OR in each tower and the VA, the Acute Pain Service, OB, the outpatient surgical centers, and pain clinics,” said Sarah Bloom, residency coordinator in the UF Department of Anesthesiology.
A number of staff, faculty, fellows, residents, and techs worked hard to make this rotation a success. Many thanks to all who taught, planned, and organized.
