Stacia Andrews, M.D., earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and her medical degree from St. George’s University in Grenada. She is now in her final year of our anesthesiology residency program. We asked Dr. Andrews about her experience in our residency program and her advice for new residents.

Stacia Andrews

Q: Why did you choose the University of Florida for your residency?

A: I came to the University of Florida for its outstanding training. Our anesthesiologists at UF are among the best in the country and we also have the opportunity to work with some highly skilled surgeons.

Q: How have you seen the residency program change?

A: Since I have been here the largest improvement in the program has been more of a focus on resident education. Specifically, we now have some protected academic time.

Q: What is one thing you wish you had known on your first day of residency?

A: On the first day of residency, I wish I knew to trust the process of learning here at UF. Our program produces clinically competent, knowledgeable, and skilled anesthesiologists. So, even though at times you may feel overwhelmed, you are exactly where you need to be.

Q: Any advice for incoming residents?

A: This is possibly one of the hardest times in your life, so take care of yourself and build a support system, especially if you’re away from home, but also continually put yourself in challenging situations as it’ll only make you a better attending.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Gainesville?

A: My favorite thing about Gainesville is that it’s a great place to raise a family and make lifelong friends.

Q: What are your plans for after residency?

A: After residency, I plan to take a part-time private practice job in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I miss my family in Illinois and can’t wait to have snow again!
