We are pleased to announce that Rene Przkora, M.D., Ph.D., professor of anesthesiology, chief of the Division of Pain Medicine, and program director for our Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship, has been named interim associate chair of research for the UF Department of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Przkora advocates for a collaborative approach to research and strives to increase associations with other departments in the UF College of Medicine as well as prominent academic institutions beyond UF. He has a strong background in academic leadership and mentoring, having advised dozens of residents and fellows in various projects, research, and presentations throughout their training.
Dr. Przkora endeavors to include clinical service, education, and research and innovation into his daily activities. His research interests range from perioperative optimization over pain management to education and the integration of technology. Over his expansive career, his research efforts have resulted in over 75 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters. He has been awarded dozens of local and national grants, including some from the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Przkora joined the department in 2014 as an associate professor of anesthesiology and fellowship director of our pain medicine fellowship. In 2016, he was appointed chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and was promoted to professor in 2019. Before joining UF, Dr. Przkora was an assistant professor of anesthesiology and the assistant director of the pain medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Przkora assumes the role of associate chair of research from François Modave, Ph.D., who served in the position beginning in April 2023. Under Dr. Modave’s leadership, the department’s research enterprise expanded. He brought expertise in artificial intelligence and informatics to the department, and, under his guidance, the Division of Clinical Informatics and the Division of Education Research and Scholarship were established. Dr. Modave was also instrumental in the department pursuing membership in the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG). Additionally, he led a retreat to generate ideas for the research division and to solicit feedback. In response to the retreat discussions, Dr. Modave initiated research onboardings. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Modave for his dedicated leadership of our research division.
