Residents and faculty celebrated at 2024 graduation

Class of 2-0-2-4

The UF Department of Anesthesiology held the 2024 Residents’ Graduation and Awards Ceremony on June 15 at the Champion’s Club at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Graduation certificates and a number of awards were presented by Interim Department Chair Greg Janelle, M.D., Associate Chair for Education Timothy W. Martin, M.D., MBA, and many faculty, residents, and staff. Twenty-five residents were celebrated for completing the anesthesiology residency program.

During the event, many outstanding residents and faculty received awards. Tatsiana Kryvitskaya, M.D., received several honors, including the Chair’s Award for Best Resident and Division Awards in Obstetric Anesthesiology, Acute Pain Medicine, and Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. Anthony A. Barrios, M.D., also won multiple awards, receiving the CRNA/CAA Award for Resident of the Year, the Outstanding Senior Resident Award, and the Division Award in VA Anesthesiology. On the faculty side, David Hutchinson, M.D., was named the T.W. Andersen Teacher of the Year, and Brenda Fahy was honored with both the Haven M. Perkins Lifetime Teaching Award and the Chair’s Award for Unsung Hero. The Chair’s Award for Best Faculty Member was given to Yury Zasimovich, M.D. Tim Martin, M.D., M.B.A., was given a special honor, the inaugural Chair’s Education Award. The full list of award recipients is below.

“It’s a great program,” said Angela Bott, D.O., recipient of Division Awards in both Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) and Transition to Practice. “I’m most grateful to all of our attendings for sharing their wisdom and for their patience over the past four years.”

Affan Ahmad, m.d.

“You’re going to be good when you’re done. You’re going to have enough time with your family and you’re going to be good at what you do when you’re finished here.”

Nathan Eshenroder, M.D., echoed her remarks. “It was a great experience to be able to get to know all these people, and it was a great education here at the University of Florida. The people I’ve met, from the residents to the faculty and even the surgeons involved have all been very, very fun and good to work with.”

Over 200 people joined the graduating residents in celebration, including their spouses, children, and other family members, as well as faculty and departmental staff. While being presented with their certificates, they took turns thanking family, friends, and others who helped them succeed.

Ryan Belk, D.O., who received an honorable mention for the Division Award in Pediatric Anesthesiology, talked about how his residency prepared him for professional practice. “The biggest growing experiences were when we were on the mole team, the two-week night shift. That’s when we applied all of the skills that we use. It’s where I saw the biggest procedures I’ve done, and the most intense ones usually happened at night. We really had to use all of our experience. I really enjoyed my experience—it’s been a good program with extensive training. You see a lot of different pathologies, and you get prepared for the wide range of people you potentially see for anesthesia.”

The supportive environment at UF was noted by several graduates. “Even though it’s a very large program, we’re a really tight family, honestly,” said Dr. Bott. “Everybody knows and looks out for each other.” Harmeet Bawa, M.D., agreed, stating, “Everyone’s been super supportive, and it’s been a great environment to succeed in. I’m really happy I came here.”

As encouragement to any doctors considering the University of Florida for their residency, Affan Ahmad, M.D., said, “You’re going to be good when you’re done. You’re going to have enough time with your family and you’re going to be good at what you do when you’re finished here.” Dr. Bawa emphasized this, saying, “Do it. You’ll have no regrets, and you’ll become the best anesthesiologist possible.”

Congratulations to each of our 25 resident graduates of the class of 2024!
