Drs. Spiess and Burger receive awards at Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting

Two of our faculty received honors at this year’s Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) Annual Meeting held May 14-17 in Palm Springs, California.

Bruce Spiess, M.D., FAHA, emeritus professor of anesthesiology, received the 2022 Presidential Lifetime Outstanding Service Award, which is given in recognition of outstanding, long-term contribution to the SCA. Spiess retired from the department in March after six years as professor and associate chair of research.

Melissa Burger, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology, received a Best of Meeting Presentation award for her abstract, titled “Next generation point-of-care coagulation testing technologies to improve patient blood management in cardiac surgery.”

Spiess created the department’s ongoing Patient Blood Management program, and Burger has been active in efforts to apply patient blood management in cardiac surgery.

Congratulations, Drs. Spiess and Burger!
