Pain Medicine Division Receives Industry Funding for Neurostimulation Trial

Our Pain Medicine division is excited to be a site for the REALITY study. This industry-funded study will examine 5 years of data on spinal cord stimulation and dorsal root ganglion stimulation.

Patients will be undergoing permanent implant with a BurstDR spinal cord stimulator (SCS) or dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulator to treat their chronic pain. They will then be tracked for 5 years after implantation. The first two patients were enrolled in the beginning of August 2019.

Ajay Antony, MD, is the primary investigator. Rene Przkora MD, PhD; Stephen Lucas, MD; Sanjeev Kumar, MD; Andrew McNeil, DO; and Juan Mora, MD, are co-investigators.

Department of Anesthesiology Clinical Research Coordinator Amy Gunnett, RN, CCRC, and the anesthesiology research team have been critical in allowing us to perform high-level research here, said Dr. Antony.

The objective of the study is to capture long-term, real-world, safety and effectiveness data on Abbott’s market-released neurostimulation systems by collecting short term and long term data on various populations implanted with Abbott systems looking at overall clinical improvement of the patients. By being part of such an important trial we are enhancing UF Health’s commitment to excellence in patient care and research in neuromodulation.
