The Gulf Atlantic Anesthesia Resident’s Research Conference (GAARRC) took place April 15-17, 2016, in New Orleans, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and was hosted by the Ochsner Health System. GAARRC is an annual meeting that encourages and creates an opportunity for anesthesia residents and professionals to take part in concurrent educational sessions as well as networking opportunities of interest to members of the anesthesia community. This professional meeting is devoted to presentations by resident physicians from anesthesiology programs based in the Southeastern region of the United States. After participating in various educational activities, the learners become more confident in presenting scientific information, gaining information on the latest techniques in the field of anesthesiology, networking with anesthesia professionals, and many other interesting career-guided opportunities.
This year, our UF residents and fellows showcased their incredible presentations and two residents in particular stood out: Ashley Screws won 2nd place and Stefanie Vallancourt won 1st place and “Best Overall Presentation.” Vallancourt also received an award from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) that includes a trip to this year’s International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) annual meeting in San Francisco.
Thanks go out to Dr. Allie Haller, who spent many hours preparing this year’s residents for the conference, as well as Drs. Sonia Mehta, Kiki Nin, Sean Kiley, and Tim Martin for their participation. We also appreciate Rickey McHugh and Kelly Spaulding for their help with logistics. We would also like to thank everyone else who advised and worked with the residents on their projects, including Dr. Morey for his continued support and efforts on behalf of GAARC.
Next year, GAARRC will be held in Jacksonville at One Ocean Resort, April 7-9, 2017. Mississippi will host in 2018 and UF has the honors in 2019!
