Message from the Chiefs

Welcome from the Chief Residents at University of Florida, Department of Anesthesiology!  We are a diverse program with residents from across the country and internationally. There are 22 residents per year, as well as 12 clinical base interns connected with our residency. Approximately half our spots are 4 year categorical positions with the remaining filled by residents who completed internships elsewhere.

Our program trains residents to be exceptional clinicians and benefit from research opportunities. As a result, we continue to excel in all fields of anesthesia and go on to competitive fellowships and employment positions.  There are many of our faculty who continue to receive teaching awards year after year; overall speaking volumes to the quality and nature of our Anesthesiology teaching program.  Our residents are also involved with the worldwide Lifebox campaign, this year focusing our efforts on rural healthcare in Honduras.

Our primary training sites are at Shands Hospital and Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Hospital.  There are 35 operating rooms at Shands providing for all types of surgery, which allows for exposure to most all surgical subspecialties. Additionally, we support the care of over a 100 critical care beds.  We also deliver ambulatory anesthesia at Florida Surgical and Children’s Surgical Centers.  At Malcom Randall VA they have one the busiest surgical departments amongst VA hospitals across the country.  In summary, we provide anesthesia for nearly 35,000 patients a year.

Life in Gainesville maintains a reasonable cost of living along with an abundance of options for outdoor activities. It is a college town that has the benefits of being nearby to major cities and world-class beaches. Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville are all within a two hour drive, and Atlantic and Gulf beaches are a similar distance. Since residents have three full weekends off per month, they are able to enjoy much of what Florida has to offer.

We hope you are as excited about our program as we are, and welcome any questions you may have about our program.

Sincerely,
