Devoted Staff Member Retires after 30 Years of Service

A little over 30 years ago, Myrtle Williams joined the Department of Anesthesiology as a Clerk Typist, working in the original M542 Research Lab. She ordered all the research animals, equipment, and supplies, and ran the schedule, supporting the entire department’s research activities.

In the early 90s, Myrtle also started providing support to the medical student clerkship rotations. She was quickly promoted to secretary, then to senior secretary, and then to program assistant. Myrtle did such a great job that eventually the electives were also assigned to her, and then the Anesthesia Interest Group. She has seen many changes in the programs.

The medical students and housestaff hold Myrtle in such high regard that she was awarded “The Unsung Hero” Award at the housestaff graduation ceremony a few years ago. It was the first and only award of its kind.

Myrtle has been a great asset to our department and will be missed very much. She is very excited about retirement and we are very happy for her.
